Perhaps I should qualify that. This weekend, I was utterly delighted for Sean Penn when he won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the titular gay-rights political vanguard in Milk - and then utterly delighted with him when he used part of his acceptance speech to shame those who had voted for California's Proposition 8. In his cut-to-the-chase words: "For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight - I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect, and anticipate their great shame, and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes, if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."
Brought tears to my eyes; it really did.
Then the onetime rock semi-star and now morning DJ Greg Kihn weighed in with a blog entry (scroll down to "Academy Awards," Monday 02-23-2009 7:46am PT) that I'm told he recited on the air on KFOX vituperatively. Key line: "Sean Penn insulted me and everyone else that voted their conscience on Prop 8. Wow! This is pretty entertaining stuff. Leave it to Hollywierd to honor this bunch."
So not only is Kihn societally backward, he also still says "Hollyweird."
Those of us who think support of Prop 8 is evidence of a lack of conscience were of course appalled; many wrote letters or sent e-mails or called in to complain. And so he backtracked today - ever so slightly: "I would like to APOLOGIZE to anyone I offended. That was not my intention. I am not against gay people, I had a gay guy in my band for many years. I like gay people! I work with gays and have many gay friends. I am not particularly fond of Sean Penn in general, but he's got the right to get up there and express his views. That's what free speech is all about!"
Oh, Greggy, don't you worry about my being offended - it's only civil rights, right? No great shakes. And how wonderful of you to permit Sean Penn his free speech, but I'm sure those gay people you know and like so much would like you a little bit better if you supported not merely their speech but their LIVES.
Think about it, you Kihn-bred coward. Understand that what you call "conscience," we who are thinking and feeling people call "discrimination." Until you get that, you're just another "Jeopardy" loser.

Superbly stated, Mr Argot. I love you when you're angry!
Greg Kihn is such a fool. I had always thought he was sort of pathetic (I'm sure I don't have to explain why) but I kind of got over my disgust with him because he is works for one of the few stations to actually play music during the morning and I don't have a cd player in my car. I happened to hear his little episodes yesterday and today and he's a total dink. He started blathering on yesterday - what does he have against Sean Penn anyway? ha - and I thought, damn, what a fool. Then today I tuned in and some hag from Hollister had called in and was whining about how he should "keep talking" and that everyone's voice deserves to be heard. Oh, whatever, but I will tell you this: I was THRILLED to hear that the bigots feel that they aren't being represented these days. Welcome to the other side of the fence, lady! I've had to listen to the bs of the Bush Administration and the right-wing biased media for the last eight blessed years. And then, this is rich: Kihn went on about how he was a "mix" of politics, socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I tend to be that way myself, but in my eyes "socially liberal" does not mean that you worry about gay marriage. It means you worry about your money and you don't want anybody else getting in your business. (I do support the stim, though, so I guess I'm not THAT conservative). Anyway, I thought it was totally foolish of him to try and backtrack with that social liberal argument. I hope all of these blowhards get pushed back on. I'm a married straight woman from CA and I support equal rights for everybody and there are a LOT of us out here in California. In fact, I think that prop was passed due to dirty campaign politics from the Republicans - I don't know if you're from CA, but I'm a registered Democrat and for the days before the election I was bombarded with Yes on Prop 8 messages using some quote from Obama that I think was taken out of context. Needless to say I don't usually get calls from the Republicans so I was curious as to why I was getting this pro neo-con message. I'm sure a lot of other people got it, too. Sorry for the long message but I had to respond. Greg Kihn is a frigging idiot and I'm not going to listen to him anymore.
Mike - you're in luck; there's lots to be angry about these days.
Tee Dee - thank you for your thoughtful comments! I agree with you wholeheartedly here. And I hope you stick around for my less antagonistic scribblings.
Thanks.
Greg calls himself a "social liberal", but he's really a Kihn-servative.
Lovely and eloquently put. Seems Mr. Kihn is like the redneck who isn't a racist because they have a black friend. Who cares that he had a gay guy in his band.
